The Correlation Between Health and Happiness

We have all heard the saying 'laughter is the best medicine" but how much truth is there to this statement? Apparently a lot! Research has found that happiness itself may cause good health, and may be as important a factor as certain unhealthy habits such as smoking. A study in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences examined the link between happiness and a number of health factors in 200 Caucasian adults, age 45-59 years, all of whom worked for the government in London, England. The study assessed each participant on a work day and weekend day, measuring them at work and play for a number of criteria including blood pressure, heart rate and stress hormone (cortisol) levels. Participants were measured under normal conditions and after a mental stress test. Under each condition participants ranked their happiness on a scale of 1 (lowest) to 5 (highest). There were no differences in happiness between people who were married or single, male or female or of varying socioeconomic status; however the happiest participants had the best results across the board for the health markers. I.e. happier people had lower heart rates, and an average of 32% lower levels of cortisol which can have a direct effect on other elements such as blood sugar.

Finally one decided I should take an experimental drug called Ro-Accutane. We had to go to the drug company main office and sign a waiver for their drug was experimental and severe side effects were possible.

In 2004 while visiting the beaches of Boracay I got bit by sandflies and suffered for 2 whole years of itching all over my arms and legs. After months on steroid injections and steroid creams, I gave up and just let it be and in 2006 the suspected leishmaniasis went away.

All throughout my life I had foliculitis, got red splotches on my body when I took a bath, got easily faintly tired with strenuous activity, had heart burns, left rotation shoulder pain, was hospitalized for various unknown viral diseases and had some heart murmur called mitral valve prolapse and became obese at 170 pounds and wore 38″ waistline pants.

Beginning with my spouse and I's secondary infertility adventure in 2002 led us to clean up our diet eliminating junk foods and eliminating anything not edible from being put on our skin and throwing away the microwave oven. And using raw oysters to increase sperm counts.

In the same 2002 while trying to conceive I came down with an unknown viral illness, was hospitalized for 3 days, then suffered from chronic fatigue syndrome for 1 month. The heart doctor who ordered a battery of tests said nothing came out of the tests so he wanted to shape my heart by prescribing a heart shaping medicine called beta blockers but it may kill off my erections! This was so unacceptable to my core personality as I only had one child and my life goal was at least more than 4. I sternly refused the drugs and found out that by merely eliminating all sources of caffeine I was able to cure myself in 3 weeks.

When my 2nd child was born in September 2003 I was obese at 170 pounds, I desperately wanted to lose weight to look sexy enough to have more children. I blindly attempted to follow a cooked Atkins diet. I then sought the teachings of a mainstream western medicine nutritionist and she taught me the way to reduce weight was to reduce the starches and up the vegetables. I did lose weight and maintained some 140 pounds for some time. But I still was not healthy.

In 2003 a small eczema began on my lower right leg, it was a good itch, I paid no mind to it. It became full blown in middle of 2005 I had full blown eczema with the size of a steak on my right leg, on my whole face, my ears, my left arm. I was a mess, I could not work, I could not go out, all 5 doctors I saw told me I was INCURABLE and I was going to be this way for the rest of my life.

The incurable diagnosis was unacceptable for me. I was always the open minded type. No DOGMA was my motto in life. I'm an engineer, a problem solver, if these so called "doctors" said I was incurable, it only meant THEY DID NOT KNOW the cure and that their common educational foundation was AMISS. I had to find people who DID KNOW the cure... NON-DOCTORS so I drove to a far away town where there were NO western medical doctors, and my true health learning journey began with a 3rd generation herbalist named Manang Lorna.

I learned about electro-medicine, herbs and detoxing: kidney cleanses, liver flushes, colon cleanses and many other cleanses which eliminated my eczema symptoms. Free of eczema symptoms. But I wanted more. I wanted vibrant health. I knew there was more and I wanted to be healthy so bad I just had to learn more. All detox and no diet change meant no real cure.

I was ready to try raw fruitarian. And I did try raw fruitarian which only lasted me 2 months. I was getting thinner on raw fruitarian than raw vegan plus I felt cold and I was living in a tropical country, in warm Manila at 25 to 30 degrees celcius. What finally knocked me to stop the fruitarian madness was when I asked for support as to when my cold feelings would stop. A long time fruitarian said it would take 5 years! That did it, I had to find something else.

I stumbled onto the Wai Diet by Wai Genriiu (A form of Raw Paleo Diet). It was an easy step from fruitarian to Wai Diet, just add extra virgin olive oil and raw fish sashimi and raw egg yolks to my tropical fruits. Bam! Instant feeling of good health! I gained sane enough weight from 112 to 120 pounds on Wai Diet. The addition of raw meat to my meat less 4 months was a life giving breath to my health.

After 3 months on Wai Diet I got bored with just sea food, why not try land animals? I stumbled onto Aajonus Vonderplanitz who went on and on about the benefits of raw land animals, raw beef, raw chicken, plus raw dairy.

I needed some hand holding, some support to get me started and I found Geoff Purcell (in the UK) at AllExperts.com very accessible. He and Craig Bates started up Raw Paleo Forum which was very helpful for newbies like me.

I experimented with various raw land animals with duck, chicken, goat, lamb, frogs and liked raw organic grass fed beef the best... the legendary grass fed Batangas beef with yummy yellow fat is true! I experimented with many kinds of raw dairy from goat, cow and carabao and all failed, I just could not digest dairy, I realized I was lactose intolerant. My tummy also disagreed with raw green juicing.

I got curious about the Homo Optimus Diet involving cooked pork, I made my one month experiment and felt my health was inferior on cooked meat compared to raw meat.

I found out that on raw paleo diet of organic fruit and raw fatty organic animal foods, I never got sick for a whole year. I felt invincible. This was a first for me, going on and on everyday expecting not to get sick. The only times I felt sick were the times I tried eating a non-raw paleo diet. Plus for the first time I've got bicep muscles on my arms and I'm a sedentary computer geek. Gosh, that talk about eating raw meat will make you put on muscles without gym exercises are true.

In 2009 I shifted to a high fat low carb raw paleo diet and I found it to be even more comfortable. Gone were the shaky hungry feelings characterized by hypoglycemia which I thought was normal throughout my life when every meal time comes.

Raw paleo diet is the easiest diet I have been on although high quality organic fruit and organic meat is expensive. Raw Paleo Diet is even easier than regular SAD or cooked paleo diet. Being free from the shackles of cooking is a dream that must be experienced. It seems I have found "home" as raw paleo diet is so easy even a caveman can do it.

To even further my access to the best foods possible I moved my company office to Cubao, just beside my favorite wet market "Farmers Market" for daily fresh marketing.

My diet these days is a high raw fat, low carb diet composed of:

* raw organic low glycemic local fruits in season - high vitamin C fruits (guava, papaya, indian mangoes), hydrating fruits (watermelon, melon), fatty fruits (durian, coconuts) we follow the seasons

* raw fertilized duck eggs flown in from Palawan

* raw grass fed fatty Batangas beef and sometimes raw goat or raw lamb

* various raw sea food like oysters, clams, small and big fish, sea prawns, etc.

* No supplements. No supplements can match the power of real food.

Raw paleo diet and its variants is curative. My own small children have experienced eating raw paleo diet themselves. When the kids are sick I put them on a raw paleo diet same as mine, they know the cure for their illness is RAW because they experience immediate relief. The kids know who the healthiest person at home is these days.

At the end of this year 2009 I will have been 2 years on raw paleo diet and I now weigh a more respectable 128 pounds with a short height of 5′5″ and 31″ waistline pant size. Always expecting to achieve new health heights over the next years as I fine tweak and continually adjust. All my health issues have been resolved. It has only been these 2 years I have ever felt truly healthy.

Today at 40 years old I look younger, slimmer and have more strength than when I was 30. It is on raw paleo diet that I realized that humans were meant to be healthy and stay healthy, effortlessly.

The main focus of the Paleo diet is on healthy food groups; basically eliminating any food group that was not available to the cavemen in the Paleolithic era. Our ancestors did not have access to any dairy products; and the same goes for cereal grains. These items were only introduced to us less than 10,000 years ago. Today's commercial world, and international food and beverage business is about as responsible for the obesity problem as the tobacco company's are for lung cancer. When you are on a diet, or if you wish to be your ideal weight, you must avoid the general choices below.

oAny "processed" food. ANY...this means food that has been treated in an industrial way. These foods contain additives and chemicals that disturb your natural processes of digestion and elimination. In this category, you can think of any food from a can, or one that can stay on a supermarket shelf more than one month.

oAny and all fast foods. These are perhaps the worst offenders, as they somehow taste great when you are hungry, you eat them quickly, and they contain all the ingredients you don't need or your body wants; such as transfats, incorrect food combinations (cola drinks with proteins and carbohydrates), and an excess of calories.

An average fast food meal is about 1,000 or more calories. It is often more, and leaves you hungry in about 2 hours.

oAny "deep-fried" foods. This includes the famous potato, but can also include fried meats (such as fried chicken), and some sweets, such as the donut or many oriental-type sweets. These kill your diet, raise insulin levels in the blood, and there is no way to lose weight.

oAll polysaturated and animal fat. We do not say to you to eliminate fat, just eat the correct ones. These are found in fish, some vegetables and some dairy products (where omega-3 oils have been incorporated to the dairy animal's feed).

oWhite Flour. There is nothing in it good for you, nothing. Whole wheat or other whole grains are another story. Eat them as you wish, but NO white flour.

It is a dead food itself, and only causes unbalances in your digestive system. White flour was invented as it does not spoil, where whole grains do. The bugs know which is best to eat. They eat the whole grains and not bleached processed white flour.

oWhite Sugar. As its carbohydrate cousin above, white sugar also has very little or no nutritional value.

There are so many healthy alternatives to it, and although sweet, these natural sugars are easily digested in your system as they are natural as you are natural.

oMayonnaise and its Derivates. Although very tasty, and makes the food you eat it with so as well, the mayonnaise is heavily processed, usually with the cheapest oils, mostly transfatty ones, and full of preservatives.

Also mayonnaise is made from eggs, and commercially treated to withstand the age process on the supermarket shelf. It will not help you diet, and in fact, it is not good for you at all. If you make it yourself however, and eat it sparingly, that is another matter.

o Caffeinated Drinks. This includes coffee, dark tea, the cola drinks, chocolate, and the new power drinks that are appearing in nightclubs, supermarkets and gyms.

The caffeine (or similar chemical found in tea and chocolate) disturbs your metabolism, and will prevent the natural slimming process when you are dieting.

There are many other foods to both avoid and enjoy, but the above list is generally agreed to by most dieticians.

When you are NOT dieting, you can certainly eat these foods, but it is advised to do so sparingly as to remember you had dieted, lost weight, and now, why gain it back.

Many of the foods listed above are simply not natural for human consumption. Foods such as wheat, sugar, bread and even milk. This may come as a surprise but foods that are ideal for human consumption are foods that the caveman would eat such as meat, vegetables, fruit With the increase of such foods into our diet over the last 100 years conditions such as borborygmi and IBS has increased significantly.

How To Cure Borborygmi

With the cause of borborygmi now established it gives us a better idea of how to remedy this condition. Ideally you should look to restrict your intake of foods to very low sugar items. Items with a very low GI rating and items with very little carbohydrate content. These items are digested over a longer period of time and are more natural and easier to digest. These foods by their very nature cause very little gas, it is the gas that is created that will cause very loud abdominal pain, stomach bloating and........borborygmi.

Once you eliminated these problem foods then you should ideally remain eating them for a couple of weeks to give your body enough time to adjust to this new way of eating. Researchers from Norway in 2006 published in the British journal Gut additional new evidence of the link between foods and rheumatoid arthritis. Professor Bradtzaeg and his colleagues at the Institute of Pathology in Oslo measured IgG, IgA, and IgM antibodies to foods. The measured these antibodies in blood and intestinal fluid in people with rheumatoid arthritis compared with healthy people.

The researchers performed blood and intestinal fluid antibody tests to the following food antigens: gliadin, oats, cow's milk proteins (casein, lactalbumin, lactoglobulin), soy, pork, cod fish, and egg (ovalbumin). These foods are in the top 10 of common food allergens as well as food protein intolerances.

What they found was a "particularly striking (incidence) of cross reactive food antibodies in proximal gut secretions" as well as increased IgM antibodies to some of these foods in the blood. The findings in the blood were less striking than in the intestinal secretions. This is consistent with difficulties finding elevated blood antibodies to foods in people with rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune/inflammatory conditions despite a lot of anecdotal and elimination diet experience supporting the role of foods in these conditions. Interestingly, Dr. Ken Fine's stool antibodies tests may be on to something.

The results, in their opinion, indicate that measuring blood antibodies to foods in rheumatoid arthritis provides little information about the role of foods in rheumatoid arthritis. However, intestinal antibodies not only show a "striking" pattern of elevation consistent with adverse food immune reactions but also that there appears to be a potential cumulative effect of multiple foods. That is, not only may some foods trigger an abnormal immune response resulting in joint inflammation but the combination of multiple problem foods may be a key component to this link. Their results support the connection of mucosal (gut) immune activation from cross reaction of foods to rheumatoid arthritis in at least some people.

What might this mean? This data supports the concept and the experience of many people that elimination of certain problem food combinations may be beneficial in preventing or reducing joint inflammation. This is both exciting and intriguing.

Multiple commonly eaten foods frequently linked to food allergies and sensitivities may be contributing to inflammatory and/or autoimmune conditions. These common problem foods or their lectins are likely contributing to the process of gut inflammation. This is likely causing gut injury resulting in leaky gut. This injury and leaky gut, especially in genetically predisposed people, may, in the setting of altered gut bacteria (dysbiosis), predispose to further injury. This then allows the entry of toxic food protein (lectin)-bacteria complexes into the body, especially the blood stream. The result is inflammatory and/or autoimmune conditions like rheumatoid arthritis.

This gut-joint axis is likely the same mechanism as the gut-brain axis and gut-skin axis that produce the myriad of symptoms and diseases we are now seeing. The associated food protein (lectin)-bacteria immune reactions in the gut are increasingly being blamed for the development of a myriad of diseases.

Much more needs to learned, but it is interesting that certain foods keep showing up as the usual suspects. These problem foods or lectins include the grains (especially wheat, barley, rye, oats, corn), dairy (casein), nightshades (potato, tomato, peppers) and peanuts, soy and other legumes. Diets eliminating or restricting these foods have been reported as being beneficial for many symptoms and diseases. However, definitive links are difficult to establish because of limitations of scientific research.

The foods implicated are usually limited in some manner in a variety of elimination diets such as the gluten-free/casein free diet, naked diet, paleolithic/hunter-gatherer or caveman diets, arthritis diet, low carbohydrate diet, anti-inflammatory diet, and six food elimination diet.

The Paleolithic or Hunter-Gatherer diet specifically recommends restricting grains, dairy and legumes. Various anti-inflammatory or arthritis diets usually recommend eliminating either wheat or gluten, dairy and the nightshades. The dietary approach to autism commonly advocated is a casein-free, gluten-free diet.

Despite lay public reports of great successes with such elimination diets, mainstream medicine continues to be slow to study the dietary treatment of disease. However, especially in the past two to three years more studies are appearing showing links supporting a significant role of food and bacteria in the gut and various autoimmune diseases.

Born in 1969, I grew up just like every urban kid on baby formula, drugs, some fast food, lots of cooked food and following the debunked food pyramid of high cooked carbs and low fat.

When I was a child I was diagnosed with asthma and doctors prescribed anti-histamine drugs. When I had cystic acne at 16, dermatologists bombarded me with steroid injections and creams. Finally one decided I should take an experimental drug called Ro-Accutane. We had to go to the drug company main office and sign a waiver for their drug was experimental and severe side effects were possible.

In 2004 while visiting the beaches of Boracay I got bit by sandflies and suffered for 2 whole years of itching all over my arms and legs. After months on steroid injections and steroid creams, I gave up and just let it be and in 2006 the suspected leishmaniasis went away.

All throughout my life I had foliculitis, got red splotches on my body when I took a bath, got easily faintly tired with strenuous activity, had heart burns, left rotation shoulder pain, was hospitalized for various unknown viral diseases and had some heart murmur called mitral valve prolapse and became obese at 170 pounds and wore 38″ waistline pants.

Beginning with my spouse and I's secondary infertility adventure in 2002 led us to clean up our diet eliminating junk foods and eliminating anything not edible from being put on our skin and throwing away the microwave oven. And using raw oysters to increase sperm counts.

In the same 2002 while trying to conceive I came down with an unknown viral illness, was hospitalized for 3 days, then suffered from chronic fatigue syndrome for 1 month. The heart doctor who ordered a battery of tests said nothing came out of the tests so he wanted to shape my heart by prescribing a heart shaping medicine called beta blockers but it may kill off my erections! This was so unacceptable to my core personality as I only had one child and my life goal was at least more than 4. I sternly refused the drugs and found out that by merely eliminating all sources of caffeine I was able to cure myself in 3 weeks.

When my 2nd child was born in September 2003 I was obese at 170 pounds, I desperately wanted to lose weight to look sexy enough to have more children. I blindly attempted to follow a cooked Atkins diet. I then sought the teachings of a mainstream western medicine nutritionist and she taught me the way to reduce weight was to reduce the starches and up the vegetables. I did lose weight and maintained some 140 pounds for some time. But I still was not healthy.

In 2003 a small eczema began on my lower right leg, it was a good itch, I paid no mind to it. It became full blown in middle of 2005 I had full blown eczema with the size of a steak on my right leg, on my whole face, my ears, my left arm. I was a mess, I could not work, I could not go out, all 5 doctors I saw told me I was INCURABLE and I was going to be this way for the rest of my life.

The incurable diagnosis was unacceptable for me. I was always the open minded type. No DOGMA was my motto in life. I'm an engineer, a problem solver, if these so called "doctors" said I was incurable, it only meant THEY DID NOT KNOW the cure and that their common educational foundation was AMISS. I had to find people who DID KNOW the cure... NON-DOCTORS so I drove to a far away town where there were NO western medical doctors, and my true health learning journey began with a 3rd generation herbalist named Manang Lorna.

I learned about electro-medicine, herbs and detoxing: kidney cleanses, liver flushes, colon cleanses and many other cleanses which eliminated my eczema symptoms. Free of eczema symptoms. But I wanted more. I wanted vibrant health. I knew there was more and I wanted to be healthy so bad I just had to learn more. All detox and no diet change meant no real cure.

What finally knocked me to stop the fruitarian madness was when I asked for support as to when my cold feelings would stop. A long time fruitarian said it would take 5 years! That did it, I had to find something else.

It was an easy step from fruitarian to Wai Diet, just add extra virgin olive oil and raw fish sashimi and raw egg yolks to my tropical fruits. Bam! Instant feeling of good health! The ancient Greeks and Romans celebrated the laxative and satiety value of OAT BRAN and wholemeal breads, but a century ago, fibre in the diet was thought to be harmful to the body. Positive, happy people are also more likely to take good care of themselves, have a stronger support system, and live longer. One of the most convincing studies was done on a group of nuns who had almost identical histories, eliminating variables such as diet and socioeconomic background. The study involved this group of nuns each writing an auto biological sketch of her life upon acceptance into the convent, and then examining these sketches six decades later. The study found that the content of these sketches was surprisingly indicative of whether these nuns were still alive, and how healthy they were. 90% of the nuns that had written positive and cheerful sketches were still alive at age 85, while only 34% of the least cheerful nuns were alive. The happiest nuns actually lived a full 10 years longer!

Do you want to be happier, healthier, and live longer? Who doesn't! But the million dollar question is "How?" Here are 7 strategies to increase your current level of happiness:

1. Make your negative thoughts positive: Aynsley Smith, director of the sports-medicine research center at the Mayo Clinic has a simple method of training her students to focus on positive thoughts. She has her students carry a clicker pen around with them and whenever they notice they are dwelling on negative issues, they are asked to click the pen. This acts as a trigger to change one's 'thought channel'.

2. Keep a gratitude journal: Studies show that people who practice grateful thinking on a regular basis can increase their natural level of happiness significantly. Grateful thinking encourages us to be aware and spend time thinking about the positive experiences, things and people in our lives. Keeping a gratitude journal is a simple process - grab a blank notebook or journal and each night before you go to sleep, think of five things you are grateful for and write them down. Review your day and write down anything that made you feel good or that you are appreciative of - big or small. You can review your entries daily and develop a pattern of seeing things in a positive, grateful way.

3. Exercise: Many tactics to increase our happiness are short lived and actually end up making us feel worse. I.e. an extra glass or two of wine, indulging in too much chocolate ice cream, etc. Exercise not only helps in the short term, but has lasting effects that are more conducive to long term happiness. Exercise helps to reduce anxiety and increase feelings of happiness due to the release of endorphins (feel-good hormones). Regular exercise is also thought to improve sleep patterns, bringing us to another important element in increasing your happiness.

4. Sleep: Sleep deprivation has a profound effect on your happiness. Studies show that a bad night sleep is one of the top reasons for being in a sour mood at work, whereas one extra hour of sleep at night can do as much if not more for your daily happiness than a ,000 raise. We mentioned that exercise is related to a regular sleep cycle, but the two are actually interrelated. Being well rested means you are more likely to commit to a regular exercise regime, particularly if you exercise each morning, before your work day takes over.

5. Emphasize and utilize your strengths: rather than spending your thoughts and energy on correcting the things you do 'wrong' or that need improved upon, emphasize and utilize your strengths - find tasks that relate to your strengths and put them to work! Strength-use leads to feelings or pride and accomplishment, resulting in greater happiness.

6. Show kindness and compassion daily: Volunteer your time to a cause that means something to you. Be a listening ear for a friend in need. Perform random acts of kindness on a regular basis. Helping others has a dramatic effect on our own happiness. Sonya Lyubomirsky, Psychology professor at Stanford University indicates that this is most effective when all five acts are performed on the same day. Professor Lyubomirsky's instructs,

"In our daily lives, we all perform acts of kindness for others. These acts may be large or small and the person for whom the act is performed may or may not be aware of the act. Examples include feeding a stranger's parking meter, donating blood, helping a friend with homework, visiting an elderly relative, or writing a thank you letter. One day each week, you are to perform five acts of kindness. The acts do not need to be for the same person, the person may or may not be aware of the act, and the act may or may not be similar to the acts listed above."

7. Set SMART goals: That is goals that are specific, measureable, attractive, realistic and time-framed. The likelihood of achieving SMART goals is much greater, and achieving your goals leads to greater confidence and happiness. Each time you achieve a goal that you have set for yourself, you are one step closer to creating your 'ideal life'.

The first step to achieving greater happiness is having an understanding of the implication being happy has on the rest of your life. We all deserve to live long, happy, healthy lives; take matters into your own hands, start with the above strategies and get happy today!

One of the main benefits of the diet is that it only included foods that humans could hunt and gather. Thus, foods such as grains and the majority of starches aren't included in the Paleo Diet. Although it doesn't include all available natural foods, it only includes natural foods. Cavemen didn't spend their days hunting for frozen pepperoni pizzas, or gathering Twinkies.

2. Lack of food byproducts

Furthermore, the byproducts from various food sources, such as sugar from sugar cane, wouldn't be allowed in a Paleo Diet. Many of these byproducts are unhealthy, and can create various unwanted results. This is particularly true of modern processed and prepackaged foods, which often contain a Frankensteinian list of man made ingredients.

3. Weight loss

Those who maintain a Paleo Diet can experience some benefits related to weight loss. Carbohydrates, which are a no-no in the Paleo Diet, include foods such as fruits, vegetables, grains, bread, pasta, and rice. By reducing the amount of insulin in your body, your body's blood sugar level decreases. That allows your body to break down fat, instead of storing it. In a Paleo Diet, you essentially replace carbs with proteins.

1. Unbalanced diet

One of the main criticisms of the Paleo Diet is that it includes a small sampling of food varieties. That means that people following the diet have a dietary deficiency of foods such as dietary fiber and carbohydrates. Clinical studies show that including grains and non-saturated oils in one's diet tends to produce better overall results than the Paleo Diet does.

2. High saturated fat consumption

Another of the drawbacks of the Paleo Diet is that it tends to be high in saturated fat. That's due to the high amount of protein that such diets are comprised of. This would actually be an asset for cavemen, who spent the majority of their day searching for food. But it can create a major problem in modern times, since we typically spend most of our days seated. In today's world we spend more time hunting for information, than hunting for food.

3. Totally new eating habits

While many of us have consumed healthy foods, most of us haven't exclusively consumed cavemen's foods. Thus, adjusting to the Paleo Diet can be somewhat challenging for many people.

The Paleo Diet idolizes the diet of prehistoric humans, while undermining the value of a modern "well-balanced" diet. While some health experts fully support this diet, others believe that it's simply a new fad diet with an old history.
